Day 1: Kigali → Nyungwe Forest transfer + first birding

After breakfast, you’ll leave Kigali and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The journey usually takes about 2.5–3.5 hours (approximately 150–220 km), depending on traffic and where you stop along the way. When you arrive, you’ll check in and take a little time to settle in. In the late afternoon, you’ll head out for a short, easy birding session around forest edges or a nearby viewpoint area, so you can start building your bird list right away. This first outing focuses on birds you’re likely to spot in the early stages—common forest species such as sunbirds and bulbuls. If the canopy is active, your guide will also help you pick out more specialized forest birds as the light changes. You’ll learn how to find birds by calls and movement, not just by spotting colors. Dinner and overnight are at your Nyungwe lodge, so you can be ready for the main forest birding tomorrow.

Accommodation: Nyungwe Top View Lodge (or similar)

Day 2: Nyungwe rainforest birding + primate search walk

Today is your main Nyungwe rainforest day for birds and primates. After breakfast, you’ll set off with your bird guide for a focused morning session. The route and pace depend on the weather, bird activity, and what the rangers advise, but the plan stays simple: listen carefully, locate the bird, confirm the sighting, then move to the next area that looks promising. In Nyungwe, you can expect a good mix of forest birds—your guide may point you toward species in the long-tailed/olive-type groups and other canopy favorites. If conditions are right, you may also get chances that people often talk about, such as sightings linked with great blue turaco-style activity in the forest canopy. During the scheduled walk, you’ll also look for primates where permitted. Depending on the day, you could encounter chimpanzee groups or other primates found in the area. The goal is calm, respectful viewing that keeps everyone safe. After lunch, you’ll do a lighter afternoon birding session and then return for dinner.

Accommodation: Nyungwe Top View Lodge (or similar)

Day 3: Nyungwe → Lake Kivu wetland/lake-area birding

After breakfast, you’ll check out and start driving toward Lake Kivu . The transfer normally takes about 4.5–6.5 hours (around 240–360 km), with time for stops for snacks, stretching, and photos. Once you arrive, you’ll check in and shift into birding around the lake and nearby wetlands. This is a day for birds you can often see actively feeding—herons, egrets, kingfishers, and water birds in the cormorant-type group. You’ll also have chances for smaller woodland birds that move along the edges as you travel short distances by vehicle and on foot. If the weather changes, your guide will adjust where you spend time so you’re not wasting hours in the wrong spot. You’ll end the day with a calmer session near the water, when calls carry well and birds become more noticeable in the late light. Dinner is at the lodge, and the evening is a good time to review your checklist.

Accommodation: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel (or similar)

Day 4: Lake Kivu → Akagera region transfer + savannah-edge birding

Today you’ll travel to Akagera National Park. The drive typically takes about 3.5–5.5 hours (around 250–360 km), depending on your exact drop-off point and road conditions. After check-in, you’ll start with an easy first birding session around the park edges or nearby access areas. This helps you settle into the savannah habitat and gives you time to spot how the bird life changes compared to the forest and lakeshore. Akagera birding is often more open and visual, so your guide will focus on scanning patterns, watching how birds move between perches, and learning where feeding areas tend to show up. Depending on the season, you may have opportunities for birds such as crowned crane-type sightings, plus raptors seen soaring overhead. You may also spot common savannah birds like larks and weavers. If primates are active nearby in areas that allow walking, you can add a short primate viewing segment where permitted. You’ll then return for dinner and overnight with an early plan for deeper park birding tomorrow.

Accommodation: Akagera Game Lodge (or similar)

Day 5: Akagera full-day birding + primate viewing time

After breakfast, you’ll head out for a full day of guided birding in Akagera. Your route won’t feel random—your guide will base the plan on bird movement and the conditions for the day, so you keep seeing things instead of just driving around. Expect a mix of open-area scanning and shorter stops where you can carefully search for birds. This is the kind of day where you may spot birds such as bustards, weavers, and kingfishers around water points, plus raptors during their active periods. Your guide will help you tell similar species apart by watching behavior—how they perch, how they fly, and when they call—so you learn more than just names. Lunch breaks up the day, and the afternoon continues when more species become active again. If primate sightings are possible in areas you can safely visit, you’ll add a brief guided primate viewing segment, keeping a respectful distance and quiet pace. This day is especially good for people who enjoy photography, since you’re likely to get repeated chances in different light.

Accommodation: Akagera Game Lodge (or similar)

Day 6: Morning final birding + return toward Kigali

On your last day, you’ll do a short morning birding session using a “greatest hits” approach—covering birds you may have missed earlier and giving you time to photograph favorites again. After that, you’ll start the drive back to Kigali. The journey is usually about 2.5–4 hours (around 150–220 km) depending on traffic and where you’re dropped off. Along the way, your guide may pull over if a bird call stands out from the roadside habitat—those are often the best last-minute sightings. If you’re keeping a checklist, this is the time to confirm any notes you made earlier, or ask questions about something you couldn’t confidently identify. By mid-to-late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Kigali and end the safari. If you want, we can also suggest a simple local dinner spot for a relaxed wrap-up and sharing your bird photos and stories from the trip.
