Detailed Itinerary Day By Day

Day 1: Arrival, Transfer to Kibale & Bigodi Walk

Your journey starts with a morning drive west from Entebbe or Kampala, covering roughly 300 kilometers toward Fort Portal. The six-hour drive transitions from bustling city outskirts into tea plantations and crater lake country. You arrive in Kibale National Park by mid-afternoon, giving you time to settle in before stepping into the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Run by a local community development association, this swamp walk follows elevated wooden boardwalks through dense papyrus. It is one of the best places in East Africa to spot the giant blue turaco, alongside red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Afterwards, head to your lodge—such as Kibale Forest Camp or Isunga Lodge—for dinner and rest, keeping your gear ready for an early morning in the forest tomorrow.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking & Transfer to Rwenzori Base

The day starts at 8:00 AM at Kanyanchu Visitor Center for the ranger briefing. Kibale holds the highest density of primates in Africa, home to around 1,500 chimpanzees. Guided by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you head into the moist evergreen forest, tracking fruit calls and branch rustles. Once you locate a habituated troop, you spend one hour watching them groom, feed, and interact in the canopy or on the forest floor. After the walk, return to the center for lunch, then take a two-hour drive south toward the Rwenzori Mountains. You will arrive at the Kilembe trailhead base camp, located just outside Kasese town. Spend the late afternoon organizing your daypack, meeting your mountain guides, and resting up for the steep incline waiting for you on the slopes tomorrow.

Day 3: Rwenzori Hike - Kilembe Base to Sine Camp (2,596m)

Your mountain trek starts at the Kilembe ranger post at roughly 1,450 meters. After registering with the guides, the path ascends steadily along the Nyamwamba River valley. You pass through traditional Bakonzo homesteads before entering the park boundary, where the forest thickens into tall montane trees and bamboo patches. The hike up to Sine Camp (2,596 meters) covers roughly 9.5 kilometers and takes between 4 and 5 hours of sustained climbing. Along the way, you cross wooden footbridges and pause near Enock Falls as the air noticeably cools. Sine Camp sits on a narrow ridge beneath tall forest canopy, offering clear views of the valley below. You will settle into the wooden huts, enjoy a hot evening meal, and rest as temperatures drop significantly after sunset.

Day 4: Sine Camp to Base, Transfer to Queen Elizabeth Park

Wake up to early morning mountain air and a hot breakfast at Sine Camp. The descent back down to the Kilembe trailhead takes about 3 hours, following the same steep forest path you climbed the day before. Mind your knees on the slick roots and mud, especially if it rained overnight. At the base, meet your driver, pack your bags, and take a quick two-hour drive south toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. As you leave the mountain shadows behind, the landscape opens up into rolling savannah and crater lakes. In the afternoon, you drive toward your lodge, either near the northern Kazinga Channel area or further south toward the Ishasha sector. Spend the evening unwinding from the trail, enjoying a quiet meal, and watching the sunset over the rift valley floor.

Day 5: Transfer via Ishasha to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, drive south through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This remote savanna stretch is famous for its resident tree-climbing lions, which often rest on the low branches of fig trees during the heat of the day. Keep an eye out for topis, elephants, and kob herds along the track. After a game drive through the sector, continue south toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The flat plains give way to terraced hills and winding dirt mountain roads. Depending on your assigned tracking sector—such as Buhoma or Ruhija—the drive takes between 3 and 5 hours. You will reach your forest lodge by late afternoon, where you will check in, double-check your rain gear, boots, and gaiters, and receive an evening briefing for the upcoming gorilla trek.

Day 6: Mountain Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi

Report to the park headquarters by 7:30 AM for a safety briefing and group allocation. Rangers divide trackers into small groups of eight before entering the thick rainforest. Bwindi’s terrain is steep and dense, requiring you to navigate tangled vines, muddy slopes, and thick underbrush without established trails. The search can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family moved overnight. When you reach the group, you spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat as they feed, play, and rest. Keep a respectful distance and follow ranger instructions throughout the encounter. Afterward, hike back to the trailhead to collect your trekking certificate, return to your lodge for a hot shower, and relax or take a casual village walk nearby.

Day 7: Bwindi to Kampala or Entebbe via the Equator

Your final day involves a long but scenic drive back across the country. Departing Bwindi after an early breakfast, you wind through the Kigezi highlands toward Mbarara for a midday stretch. The total journey to Entebbe or Kampala takes around 8 to 10 hours, covering roughly 460 kilometers. Along the route, you make a scheduled stop at Kayabwe to stand on the Uganda Equator line. Here, you can watch short water Coriolis effect demonstrations, snap photos across both hemispheres, and enjoy a sit-down lunch at a local restaurant. Browse the craft shops for hand-carved souvenirs before completing the final leg of the drive, arriving in the city or at Entebbe International Airport in time for your evening flight home.
