Our 7-day Rwenzori Mountain trek is an unforgettable, rugged adventure. Typically following the Central Circuit, you will hike from lush tropical rainforests, through the infamous Bigo Bogs, to the snow-capped glacial zones of Mount Stanley, culminating in an attempt at Margherita Peak (5,109m)
Your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak kicks off at the park headquarters in Nyakalengija, sitting at 1,615 meters. After registering and meeting your local guides and porters, you will begin hiking through the vibrant Mubuku River valley. The trail passes through local homesteads before entering the lush tropical rainforest zone of the national park. You will cross the Mahoma River and ascend a steep ridge covered in thick vegetation. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys, chimpanzees, and the brilliant Rwenzori turaco bird. The trek today takes roughly 4 to 5 hours, covering a steady incline. You will eventually arrive at Nyabitaba Hut at 2,651 meters, where you will settle in for the evening. Here, you will enjoy a hot meal, listen to the ambient sounds of the jungle, and rest up for the steeper terrain ahead on this epic mountain expedition.
On the second day of your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak, you will leave Nyabitaba Hut behind and head deeper into the wilderness. The trail leads you through a dense, otherworldly bamboo forest before reaching the scenic Kurt Shafer Bridge, which crosses the roaring Mubuku River. Past the bridge, the terrain shifts dramatically as you enter the heather zone, characterized by giant heaths draped in Spanish moss. The path becomes increasingly rugged, requiring you to navigate slippery rocks and muddy slopes. After a demanding 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you will emerge at John Matte Hut, situated at an altitude of 3,505 meters. This spot offers stunning, moody views of the surrounding peaks if the weather is clear. You will spend the night here, acclimatizing to the higher altitude while enjoying a hearty dinner prepared by your mountain crew.
Wake up early for day three of your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak, which introduces you to the infamous Rwenzori bogs. You will trek through the lower Bigo Bog, stepping carefully from one tussock of grass to another to avoid sinking into the deep mud. A wooden boardwalk helps ease parts of this crossing, leading you into the upper Bigo Bog. The landscape here feels prehistoric, filled with giant lobelias and groundsels. After conquering the bogs, the trail climbs steadily toward Lake Bujuku. You will hike along the shores of this stunning, misty alpine lake before finally arriving at Bujuku Hut, perched at 3,962 meters. This 5 to 6-hour hike places you right in the valley between Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley, offering a dramatic alpine setting for your evening rest.
Day four of your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak brings a steep and thrilling alpine challenge. Leaving Bujuku Hut, you will navigate muddy trails and massive boulders as you climb up the valley toward Scott Elliot Pass. This section is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, as you ascend to an altitude of 4,372 meters at the top of the pass. Standing at the pass gives you panoramic views of the jagged peaks and the massive glaciers of Mount Stanley. From this high point, the trail slopes downward through a spectacular rocky landscape toward the pristine Kitandara Lakes. After about 4 to 5 hours of intensive hiking, you will reach Kitandara Hut, beautifully positioned at 4,023 meters right next to the water. This peaceful lakeside location is the perfect place to rest your legs and recharge.
Your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak intensifies on day five as you position yourself for the ultimate summit. Today’s trek focuses on ascending to the high-altitude base camp. You will leave the lakeside and climb steeply out of the Kitandara valley, navigating exposed rock faces and cold alpine terrain. The vegetation thins out completely, replaced by cold stone, scree, and ice. The destination is Elena Hut, a rugged mountain outpost perched on a rocky ledge at 4,541 meters. This hike takes about 4 to 5 hours and requires slow, measured pacing due to the thin air. Once at the hut, your guides will help you prepare your technical gear, including crampons, harnesses, and ice axes. You will have an early dinner and go to sleep early, listening to the mountain wind ahead of tomorrow's midnight summit push.
This is the big day of your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak. Waking up around 2:00 AM, you will traverse the snow and ice of the Stanley Plateau. Using ropes and crampons, you will push through the freezing alpine air to conquer the final steep ridge, standing proudly on Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters as the sun rises. After celebrating at Africa's third-highest point, you will carefully descend back past Elena Hut and continue down through Scott Elliot Pass. The trail leads you further down the mountain, bypassing Kitandara and heading directly into the fresh landscapes of the lower alpine zone. After a massive, exhausting 10 to 12 hours of total trekking, you will arrive safely at Guy Yeoman Hut at 3,505 meters for a well-deserved, celebratory night of sleep.
The final leg of your 7 Days Mountain Rwenzori mountain climbing active adventure to Margherita Peak brings you back down to earth. You will complete the Central Circuit by descending from Guy Yeoman Hut through the deep cliffs of Kichuchu. The trail can be muddy and steep, requiring careful footwork as you pass through boggy valleys and bamboo forests once again. Eventually, you will cross the Mahoma River and rejoin the familiar path back to the Nyakalengija park gates at 1,615 meters. Completing this 5-hour descent marks the official end of your wilderness trek. At the gate, you will bid farewell to your incredible team of Ugandan guides and porters. You will then board your safari vehicle for the return drive to Kampala or Entebbe, carrying unforgettable memories of snow, mud, and triumph from the majestic Mountains of the Moon.
