Detailed Itinerary Day By Day

Day 1: Nyakalengija Gate (1,600m) to John Matte Hut (3,420m)

Your 6 Days Rwenzori trek with Mountain Stanley, Margherita, Albert or Alexander begins at the UWA headquarters in Nyakalengija (1,600m) for briefing and porter allocation. Skipping the traditional first-night stop at Nyabitaba Hut to condense the itinerary makes this an incredibly demanding opening day. You will immediately plunge into the lush, dense Afro-montane forest zone. The trail winds alongside the roaring Mubuku River, crossing various streams via suspension bridges. Keep an eye out for three-horned chameleons, Rwenzori turacos, and blue monkeys. As you gain altitude, the landscape transitions dramatically into a thick bamboo forest. You will push past the Nyabitaba area, climbing steeply over slippery tree roots and muddy slopes. The final stretch takes you through the heather zone before you cross the Mahoma River. After a grueling 7 to 8 hours of trekking and a massive vertical gain of 1,820 meters, you will arrive at John Matte Hut (3,420m) for a well-deserved dinner and rest.

Day 2: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

This day introduces you to the otherworldly landscapes that define the Rwenzori range. Leaving John Matte Hut, the trail descends to cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the Bujuku River. From here, you enter the infamous Lower Bigo Bog. You will navigate across this marshy valley by balancing on a network of wooden boardwalks. The area is heavily populated by giant lobelias and groundsels, creating a prehistoric atmosphere. After conquering the Lower Bog, a steep, muddy climb leads you to the Upper Bigo Bog. Another boardwalk section guides you past a beautiful rock shelter. The valley opens up to reveal stunning, stark views of Mount Baker and Mount Speke. The trail remains boggy as you approach the shores of scenic Lake Bujuku. After 5 to 6 hours of navigating the unique alpine mire, you reach Bujuku Hut (3,962m), nestled in a valley between three massive mountain peaks.

Day 3: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut (4,430m)

Today is short but exceptionally steep, focusing entirely on positioning you for the ultimate summit push. You depart Bujuku Hut and plunge right back into the heavy mud, navigating around the lake. The trail soon begins a punishing ascent through the moss-draped Groundsel Gully. You will scramble up steep gradients, using tree branches and rocks for leverage. At the top of the gully, the trail splits. The right path heads toward Scott-Elliot Pass, while your route branches left, climbing sharply over exposed, cold rock slabs. This section can become treacherous if wet or icy, requiring careful footing. As you climb higher, the vegetation thins out entirely, replaced by a cold, alpine desert environment. After 4 to 5 hours of intensive climbing, you arrive at Elena Hut (4,430m). This basic, rocky outpost sits directly below the Mount Stanley glacier and serves as your freezing base camp for the night.

Day 4: Summit Day! Elena Hut to Margherita/Alexandra/Albert Peak – Down to Kitandara Hut (4,027m)

An intense 2:00 AM wake-up call marks the start of your most challenging day. Leaving Elena Hut in pitch darkness, you will scramble over cold, steep rocks using headlamps. At the glacier's edge, you will strap on crampons, harness up, and rope together. Your team will trek across the icy Stanley Plateau, dealing with freezing winds and thin air. Depending on your primary target, you will navigate the technical crevasses toward Margherita Peak (5,109m), Alexandra Peak (5,091m), or Albert Peak (5,087m). Reaching the summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views over Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. After celebrating, you will carefully descend back across the glacier to the Elena junction. Instead of resting, you continue descending via the steep, rocky Scott-Elliot Pass. The trail winds down past the spectacular, alpine Kitandara Lakes to reach Kitandara Hut (4,027m) after 10 to 14 exhausting hours.

Day 5: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,450m)

The day starts with a sharp physical challenge as you leave the Kitandara Lakes behind. You will immediately face a steep, technical climb up the headwall of Mount Baker. This path requires a lot of hand-to-rock scrambling and careful balance. At the top of the climb, you reach Fresh Field Pass (4,282m). On a clear morning, this high mountain pass offers incredible views extending West into the dense jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo. From the pass, the long descent begins. The trail becomes notoriously muddy, rocky, and slippery as you navigate the Kabamba rock shelters. You will trek through fields of giant heather trees draped in old man’s beard moss, crossing several boggy sections along the way. After 5 to 6 hours of navigating this rugged descent, you will arrive at the Guy Yeoman Hut (3,450m), located alongside the Mubuku River.

Day 6: Guy Yeoman Hut back to Nyakalengija Gate (1,600m)

Your final day on the mountain is a long, continuous descent back to the park boundary. Leaving Guy Yeoman Hut, the trail follows the Mubuku River valley, dropping steeply through the lower heather and bamboo zones. You will face the challenging descent of the Kichuchu rock wall, which requires careful stepping down muddy, vertical drops. The path eventually levels out slightly as you pass the familiar Nyabitaba Hut area, where you can take a brief break. The final leg of the trek takes you through the tropical rainforest zone, where the air grows noticeably warmer and richer in oxygen. You will cross the Mahoma River one last time before arriving back at the Nyakalengija Gate (1,600m). After 7 to 8 hours of hiking, you will sign out with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, receive your summit certificates, and conclude your trek.
