This 6-Days Uganda-Rwanda Primate and Wildlife Safari begins with a road trip from Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a journey of approximately 7 to 8 hours. The route passes through scenic rural landscapes and offers a stop at the Equator for a photo opportunity. After settling into your lodge, you will embark on an afternoon game drive in the Kasenyi plains. This area is known for its lions, which often prey on the abundant Uganda kobs found here. Keep an eye out for other wildlife, such as elephants, buffaloes, and warthogs, as the sun dips below the horizon.
Your second day is dedicated to a deeper exploration of Queen Elizabeth National Park's diverse ecosystems. The morning begins with another game drive, offering a chance to see different species that are more active during the early hours. Later in the afternoon, you will board a boat for a serene cruise along the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George. The channel is a wildlife haven, teeming with large numbers of hippos and crocodiles. Along the banks, you can spot buffaloes, elephants, and a wide variety of water birds. The day concludes with a visit to the park's scenic crater lakes region, characterized by stunning geological features.
The day starts with an early morning chimpanzee tracking experience in the Kalinzu Forest Reserve. After a briefing, you will head into the forest to find the chimps and spend up to an hour observing them as they feed, play, and interact. The trek can take a few hours and may reveal other primate and bird species. Following the chimp trek, you will begin the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive is approximately 5 to 6 hours and offers scenic views of the Kigezi highlands. Upon arrival, you have the option of a cultural experience with the Batwa pygmy community, learning about their history and forest lifestyle.
This is a highlight of the safari, with an early start for the gorilla trekking briefing at the park headquarters. A park ranger will lead you into the dense, misty forest to find one of the habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek can be strenuous and last for several hours, but the reward of spending an hour with these gentle giants is an unforgettable, humbling experience. Following the trek, you will cross the border into Rwanda and transfer to your accommodation near Volcanoes National Park. The border crossing and subsequent drive take about 2 to 3 hours, offering views of Rwanda's famed "land of a thousand hills."
After breakfast, you will head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for another primate tracking adventure—this time to see the endangered golden monkeys. These playful and energetic primates live in the bamboo forests on the slopes of the volcanoes. Your trackers will lead you to their location, where you can observe their antics for an hour. In the afternoon, you will visit the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village (also known as the Gorilla Guardians Village). Here, you can learn about Rwandan traditions, history, and community life through music, dance, and guided demonstrations.
The final day of your 6-Days Uganda-Rwanda Primate and Wildlife Safari begins with a scenic drive from Volcanoes National Park to Rwanda's capital, Kigali, a journey of approximately 2 to 3 hours. Upon arrival, you'll embark on a city tour to explore its key landmarks. You may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to reflect on Rwanda's somber history, wander through local markets like Kimironko, or explore craft markets. After a final lunch, your driver will take you to Kigali International Airport for your departure, carrying with your memories of an extraordinary wildlife and cultural odyssey
