Day 1: Drive to Lake Mburo National Park & Boat Cruise

The drive to Lake Mburo National Park is approximately 4 to 4.5 hours. The route follows the well-maintained Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara highway. A planned stop is made at the Equator crossing line in Kayabwe for a photo opportunity and a quick break.

Upon arrival and checking into your lodge, you will have lunch. In the afternoon, a boat cruise on Lake Mburo is planned. This two-hour boat trip is a central activity of the day, offering clear views of the park's aquatic life and the animals that gather at the water's edge. The peaceful boat trip allows you to see hippos and Nile crocodiles in the water. On the shores, you can observe species like buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, impalas, and various water bird species such as the African fish eagle, pelicans, and cormorants.

Day 2: Morning Activity & Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

An early morning activity in Lake Mburo National Park is planned. You can choose a game drive or a guided walking safari, which is a popular and unique option in this park since there are no elephants or lions. A walking safari allows for closer proximity to animals without engine noise. You may see herds of zebras, giraffes, elands, topis, and oribis. After the activity and breakfast, you will check out and begin the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The drive from Lake Mburo to Bwindi typically takes 5 to 6 hours, or possibly up to 7 hours depending on the specific sector of Bwindi you are visiting. The route goes through the towns of Mbarara and Kabale, passing through the beautiful Kigezi Highlands, known for their terraced hillsides and rural scenery. Lunch will be a stop en route. The cooler mountain air upon arrival in Bwindi provides a change from the savannah environment and prepares you for the next day's activity.

Day 3: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

This day is dedicated to the mountain gorilla trekking activity. After an early breakfast, your guide will drive you to the park headquarters for a briefing from the Uganda Wildlife Authority staff, usually starting around 8:00 am. Ensure you have drinking water, snacks, rain gear, and good walking boots as the trek can be physically demanding, with hiking on steep, muddy terrain that can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours.

Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, you will hike into the dense rainforest to locate one of the habituated gorilla families. The time taken to find the gorillas varies daily based on their location. Once the family is found, you spend a quiet, permitted hour observing these great apes in their natural habitat. You will see various behaviors like feeding, grooming, and social interactions among the adults and their young. Beyond the gorillas, the forest is home to other species, including several types of monkeys, forest birds, and butterflies.

Day 4: Return Journey to Kampala/Entebbe

Following a final breakfast at your lodge in Bwindi, the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe begins. The drive back to the capital region is a long one, typically taking 8 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and the final drop-off location. The route retraces some of your path through the southwestern region of Uganda.

A stop en route for lunch is planned. There is also the option of visiting the Igongo Cultural Village near Mbarara to learn about the Bahima and Ankole cultures and history. Another short stop at the Equator crossing allows for a final set of pictures if missed on the first day. The drive offers more opportunities to observe daily Ugandan rural life before arriving back in Kampala or at Entebbe International Airport in the late afternoon or evening for your departure.
