Use this day to adjust to the time zone, typically UTC+3. In the evening, meet your guide for a briefing about the climb and hiking safari. It’s essential to gather your gear and confirm any last-minute arrangements. Arusha is the gateway to Kilimanjaro and offers stunning views of the mountain. Enjoy local cuisine, such as ugali or nyama choma, to prepare for the adventure ahead.
Drive 1.5 hours to Machame Gate (1,800m) to begin your ascent. After registration, start your hike through the lush rainforest, where you'll encounter diverse flora and fauna, including blue monkeys and various bird species. The trail covers approximately 10 kilometers, leading to Machame Camp (3,000m). This section takes about 5-7 hours. Camp facilities include tents, dining areas, and toilets. Hike from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960m), a distance of about 10 kilometers, taking around 6-8 hours. This day includes a challenging ascent to Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco. The Lava Tower offers breathtaking views and is an excellent spot for lunch. The descent helps your body adjust to altitude changes. Arriving at Barranco Camp, enjoy views of the Barranco Wall, a dramatic climb you'll tackle the next day. Evening meals focus on nutrition to prepare for the summit.
Day 5 involves climbing the Barranco Wall, a steep ascent of about 300 meters, followed by a hike to Karanga Camp (4,000m), covering roughly 5 kilometers. This challenging section takes 5-7 hours. The wall offers stunning vistas and is a highlight of the trek. At Karanga Camp, enjoy a well-deserved meal and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Ensure you hydrate well, as the altitude can cause fatigue. This day is crucial for acclimatization and preparing for the final ascent.
On the final summit day, start your ascent at midnight, heading toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The trek covers approximately 16 kilometers round trip and takes 10-14 hours.
