Your adventure begins in Kigali, where you are greeted by the city’s impeccable cleanliness and rolling green ridges. After a briefing, you’ll embark on a 2.5-hour scenic drive north toward the town of Musanze, the gateway to the volcanoes. The journey offers a stunning visual introduction to the "Land of a Thousand Hills," with terraced agriculture clinging to steep slopes. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a moment of reflection or explore the Twin Lakes, Burera and Ruhondo, for a peaceful boat ride with the five volcanoes as your backdrop. You’ll check into a lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where the cool mountain air and a warm fire provide the perfect environment to prepare for the following morning’s ascent. The evening is spent in quiet anticipation of the volcanic heights to come.

The day starts at dawn with a briefing at the Kinigi park headquarters. After a short drive to the trailhead, you begin the hike through a diverse range of ecosystems, from thick bamboo forests to Hagenia-Hypericum woodlands. The climb is moderately challenging and can be muddy, but the expert rangers provide fascinating insights into the park’s biodiversity. On the lower slopes, you may even spot golden monkeys or signs of mountain gorillas. After roughly 4 hours of climbing, you reach the summit to find the magnificent Bisoke Crater Lake, a mirror-like body of water surrounded by jagged volcanic peaks. After a celebratory lunch at the top, you’ll descend to the base (about 2 hours) and be transferred back to Kigali. You’ll arrive in the city by early evening, carrying the exhilarating sense of accomplishment that only a volcanic summit can provide.
