Day 1: Arrive in Kigali

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park via Butare

Following breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive south to Nyungwe National Park. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours, with a stop in the city of Butare (Huye). Here, you will visit the Ethnographic Museum, home to one of Africa's finest ethnological collections, and the nearby Nyanza King's Palace for a glimpse into Rwanda's pre-colonial history. The drive itself is a visual treat, passing through Rwanda's signature rolling hills, tea plantations, and local villages.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Community Walk

An early start is required for a guided chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe Forest, where you will join an experienced ranger to track one of the park's habituated chimpanzee troops. The trek can be physically demanding as you navigate the dense, montane rainforest, but the reward of spending time with these intelligent primates is truly special. In the afternoon, you will join a community walk near the park to learn about local culture and village life.

Day 4: Colobus Monkey Tracking and Nyungwe Canopy Walk

This morning, set out for a guided walk to track the impressive Rwenzori colobus monkeys, known for their striking long, white fur. Nyungwe is home to several large troops of these active primates. Later, you will take on the famous Nyungwe forest canopy walk, a 160-meter-long suspended bridge that offers a unique, aerial perspective of the forest canopy and its wildlife, such as colorful birds and other monkeys.

Day 5: Transfer to Gisenyi

Today you will enjoy a scenic transfer to the Lake Kivu town of Gisenyi (Rubavu), a journey of approximately 5–6 hours. The drive offers breathtaking views along the shores of Lake Kivu, passing through verdant landscapes and farmlands. You will have the rest of the afternoon and evening to relax on the sandy beaches, swim in the lake's freshwater, or explore the lakeside promenade.

Day 6: Encounter Gisenyi and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After some leisurely time in Gisenyi, you will depart for Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze district. What to do in Gisenyi includes a morning boat trip on Lake Kivu to visit nearby islands or engage with the local fishing communities. The drive to the national park is relatively short (around 1.5 hours), arriving in time to settle into your lodge with stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking and Visit Iby’iwacu Cultural Village

Day 9: Hike Bisoke Volcano and Transfer to Kigali City

The adventurous can opt to hike Mount Bisoke, an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains, which offers breathtaking views of the crater lake at its summit. The trek is challenging and takes most of the day. For those who prefer a less strenuous activity, golden monkey trekking is another option. In the afternoon, you will begin your drive back to Kigali for an overnight stay.

Day 10: Transfer to Akagera National Park and Boat Cruise

After an early breakfast in Kigali, you will drive east for approximately 2.5–3 hours to Akagera National Park, Rwanda's only savanna park. This afternoon, take a boat trip on Lake Ihema, where you will see large pods of hippos, numerous crocodiles, and a variety of aquatic and shorebird species, including the elusive shoebill stork.

Day 11: Game Drive and Transfer Back to Kigali

Spend the morning on a thrilling game drive through Akagera's rolling plains, woodlands, and wetlands. This offers the best chance to spot the Big Five (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo), along with other wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. After lunch, you will transfer back to Kigali for your final night.

Day 12: Kigali City Tour and Departure

On your last day of your 12-day Rwanda primate safari vacation, take a guided tour of Kigali.
