Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL) of your 12-day Rwanda primate safari vacation, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon can be spent at your leisure, relaxing or taking an optional stroll to get a first feel for Rwanda's capital city. What to do on this day could include settling into your accommodation, enjoying a meal at a local restaurant, and preparing for the exciting days ahead.

Following breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive south to Nyungwe National Park. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours, with a stop in the city of Butare (Huye). Here, you will visit the Ethnographic Museum, home to one of Africa's finest ethnological collections, and the nearby Nyanza King's Palace for a glimpse into Rwanda's pre-colonial history. The drive itself is a visual treat, passing through Rwanda's signature rolling hills, tea plantations, and local villages.

An early start is required for a guided chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe Forest, where you will join an experienced ranger to track one of the park's habituated chimpanzee troops. The trek can be physically demanding as you navigate the dense, montane rainforest, but the reward of spending time with these intelligent primates is truly special. In the afternoon, you will join a community walk near the park to learn about local culture and village life.

This morning, set out for a guided walk to track the impressive Rwenzori colobus monkeys, known for their striking long, white fur. Nyungwe is home to several large troops of these active primates. Later, you will take on the famous Nyungwe forest canopy walk, a 160-meter-long suspended bridge that offers a unique, aerial perspective of the forest canopy and its wildlife, such as colorful birds and other monkeys.

Today you will enjoy a scenic transfer to the Lake Kivu town of Gisenyi (Rubavu), a journey of approximately 5–6 hours. The drive offers breathtaking views along the shores of Lake Kivu, passing through verdant landscapes and farmlands. You will have the rest of the afternoon and evening to relax on the sandy beaches, swim in the lake's freshwater, or explore the lakeside promenade.

After some leisurely time in Gisenyi, you will depart for Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze district. What to do in Gisenyi includes a morning boat trip on Lake Kivu to visit nearby islands or engage with the local fishing communities. The drive to the national park is relatively short (around 1.5 hours), arriving in time to settle into your lodge with stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes.

This is a highlight of the safari, starting with an early morning briefing at the park headquarters. You will be assigned a gorilla family and a guide before beginning your trek into the forest to find the mountain gorillas. The experience of seeing these majestic primates up close is unforgettable. In the afternoon, visit the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village (also known as Gorilla Guardians Village) for a vibrant display of traditional dance and music, and a deeper understanding of Rwandan culture.

Today's activities include a hike to the former Karisoke Research Center, founded by primatologist Dian Fossey, to see her final resting place and that of her favorite gorilla, Digit. This rewarding trek provides insight into her vital conservation work. Afterward, take a relaxing nature walk to the picturesque twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera, known for their stunning views and birdlife.

The adventurous can opt to hike Mount Bisoke, an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains, which offers breathtaking views of the crater lake at its summit. The trek is challenging and takes most of the day. For those who prefer a less strenuous activity, golden monkey trekking is another option. In the afternoon, you will begin your drive back to Kigali for an overnight stay.

After an early breakfast in Kigali, you will drive east for approximately 2.5–3 hours to Akagera National Park, Rwanda's only savanna park. This afternoon, take a boat trip on Lake Ihema, where you will see large pods of hippos, numerous crocodiles, and a variety of aquatic and shorebird species, including the elusive shoebill stork.

Spend the morning on a thrilling game drive through Akagera's rolling plains, woodlands, and wetlands. This offers the best chance to spot the Big Five (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo), along with other wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. After lunch, you will transfer back to Kigali for your final night.

On your last day of your 12-day Rwanda primate safari vacation, take a guided tour of Kigali. Visit the solemn Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre to understand the country's history and path toward reconciliation. Other activities include exploring vibrant local markets, such as Kimironko Market, and visiting craft centers for souvenirs. You will then be transferred to Kigali International Airport for your departure, filled with memories of Rwanda's incredible wildlife and culture.
